Here's my new baby. I labored through the night to finish it last night. I just couldn't sleep until I had him finished. I was finally able to get an embroidery needle (or a big needle with a big hole) and got to attach the appendages properly. I still need work on this. But I will continue trying.

Cupcake V2

Here's my second try. I did much better this time. I kept on wondering why my first one was out of shape and I looked at various photos and re-read the book.

I finally learned that I was doing my stitches all wrong. I was going through the back loop all along. That's why it was all out of shape! This is the reason why I never got into crocheting...

I'm happy that I finally got it though.  I'm glad my son appreciates both versions of my cupcake and he still said "kyuuut" to both.  :D

Finished Cupcake Amigurumi#1

Here's the finished cupcake. It's not great. My stitches are uneven and I still have to work on assembly stitching.  Decided not to do any more embellishing since it's not that good.

I have to remember to pay more attention to the stitch count.  I think I did more than what was needed for the base of the cupcake.  That's why it's so wide.

Well.. try, try again....

This is my first attempt at making amigurumi. My son is enchanted with the toy he was given (see earlier post) and I decided to try my hand in it too.

I got my supplies from Michael's. I think I spent over an hour just in the knitting/ crochet section coz I couldn't decide which yarn to get... I didn't KNOW what to get.

The girl there didn't know anything about knitting either but she was very nice and tried to help as much as she can. She said that was the only Michael's store that didn't have someone who was proficient in knitting/ crochet.

I knew there were lots and lots of kinds of yarn since they had tons of display. It was all about choices. I found the
book on amigurumi later which I should have looked for first. With this book it was now easier for me to get the proper needle and yarn. It was now just a matter of what color to choose.

Being the frugal me, I of course had to use a coupon.  Too bad coupons were not accepted for books... aww shucks.  The book is much cheaper online but with shipping costs it almost, almost amounts to the same thing.  Besides I wanted it NOW!

Walmart was just across the street and I decided to compare prices.  I was so relieved that the yarns were only a few cents cheaper here and there were a lot fewer choices.  The book and hook that I needed was not available.  Sigh of relief there.  I didn't have to go back to Michael's to return anything.

I am now starting the icing part of the cupcake.  Below is how far I've come.  I will update once I am done.

My Very First Bento

I'm soo happy. I received my second shipment from Ichiban Kan today. I decided to do my first bento for school tomorrow. It's nothing fancy but I had fun doing it.

I made teriyaki musubi. The stars, clouds, moon are made from kamaboko (fish cake) and some of the stars have cheese on them too. I had to fill the gaps and just added some ripe papaya, carrots and some lettuce underneath. Hm... what will my next bento be?

Car Egg

I got to try one of my new toys from Ichiban Kan...

Ah... it's fun to see my son easily amused.  He actually played with it before we told him that it was an egg... I'm a happy mommy.

side note:
Last Saturday I found a small Japanese store that was selling bento items.
Here's my new stash.
(l-r) quail egg mold, a bunch of different sushi rolls.

The store:
Tokyo Discount
4960 South Fort Apache Road # 470
Las Vegas
Nevada 89148
Phone: (702) 227-3027

They've got lots of anime, hello kitty and Japanese cute stuff.  I'm going back there soon.

Sushi Friday

I got my package from Ichiban Kan today! They were sooo cute! I coulnd't wait to try them out.  Here's what I did...

cooking tamagoyaki (egg omelet)... Yum!

I got the recipe and instructions from
www.lunchinabox.net

I used Alton Brown's recipe of sushi rice.

Below were made using the tiny cube mold
Using the flower mold

The first thing that Z said upon seeing them was "Flower!" and started eating the garnishes. I had over 10pcs total of the flowers and cube sushis. He ate the heart-shaped seaweed, carrot flowers and flower-shaped egg. I even had to make more flower-shaped egg. All in all we were stuffed!

.... couldn't.... help...... myself...
I ordered more items from Ichiban Kan... :P
